To promote Italian creativity in the international context, the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture organizes and supports Italian participation in the International Art Exhibitions and International Architecture Exhibitions of the Biennale di Venezia, one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in the world. For more than a century, Biennale di Venezia has been an avant-garde stage for the promotion of new artistic trends and is a must-attend event for the world of culture. Participating countries set up their own pavilions with the most interesting national proposals, in the annual alternation between art and architecture. Our country also has its own space, inaugurated (in its current guise) in 2006, at the Tese delle Vergini in the Arsenal: the Italian Pavilion.
The Italian Pavilion has a Commissioner - a role held permanently by the Director General of Contemporary Creativity - and a Curator, appointed each year by the Minister of CultureThe tasks of the Commissioner include that of contributing to the selection of the Curator of the Italian Pavilion: the selection takes place through an invitation-only competition held every year, for which the participants must produce a curatorial proposal consistent with the issues identified by the Ministry to set up critical reflection. . Particular attention is paid to the presence of young people. Following an investigation of the proposals received, prepared by the Commissioner, the Minister identifies the most suitable and entrusts the task for the curatorship of the Italian Pavilion.
