THE ANNOUNCEMENT

 

Premio Johannesburg provides a three-month residency grant for an Italian artist to foster the development of their creative skills in contact with the South African cultural and artistic environment. The residency takes place in Johannesburg at the August House (six weeks) and the NIROX Foundation (six weeks), with the possibility for the winner to participate in the activities and various collaboration opportunities offered by the structures.

 

The award was established in the framework of the agreement between DGAAP (former acronym of the current Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture), the Directorate-General for the Promotion of the Country System of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Italian Cultural Institute of Pretoria in the framework of the Cultural Programme "Italy, Culture, Africa".

 

The winner of the award will be offered a three-month scholarship which includes, in addition to a return air ticket and insurance cover, a monthly cheque for € 1,000.00 and the availability of a studio and accommodation in Johannesburg. The initiative is reserved for artists of Italian citizenship born after 31 December 1979, active in the visual arts, in the broadest sense of the term, with at least one solo exhibition and an adequate knowledge of English.

THE WINNER

 

The winner of Premio Johannesburg is Niccolò Benetton of the duo The Cool Couple (Arzignano, VI, 1986).

 

Selection committee: Fabio Troisi for the Italian Cultural Institute in Pretoria, Carolina Italiano for the DGAAP and Benji Liebmann for the NIROX Foundation.
